Nokia Still 1 in Indian Handset Market in Terms of Revenue

Nokia continues to lose market share in most regions of the world, even though the company inked a partnership with Microsoft.

The Finnish handset maker decided to drop Symbian operating system and bet everything on Windows Phone, which is one of the reasons for the company’s latest failures.

Nokia’s new CEO, Stephen Elop, decided to drop the MeeGo platform as well, which is another questionable decision, especially that the N9 is one of the most successful smartphones sold by Nokia after the company announced it would launch Windows Phone devices.

However, the Finnish company doesn’t seem to be affected in all countries. For example, Indian users still praise Nokia’s products and put it among the most trustworthy brands in the country.

According to CyberMedia’s Indian Telecom Industry report for the Indian telecommunication industry in 2011-2012, Nokia continues to be the number one handset manufacturer in the country, in terms of revenue.

Although Nokia’s market share dropped a few percent, the company still owns 38.8% market share in India. The handset maker was heavily hurt by Samsung, HTC and LG’s offensives on the Indian smartphone market, which is the main reason for Nokia sudden drop in revenue.

Luckily, Nokia managed to keep customers’ interest high through its latest dual-SIM feature-phones, but that might not save its spot for the next year.

Samsung is placed second on the Indian telecom market in term of revenue with a 25.3% market share, but it won’t come as a surprise if the South Korean company manages to switch places with Nokia by the end of the next year.

It is also worth mentioning that there’s a big gap between Samsung and the next top 10 mobile handset vendors in terms of revenue. According to this recently published report, regional manufacturer Micromax is the third handset maker in India with a mere 6.3% market share.
