No Gender for Avatars in Minecraft

Markus Persson, aka Notch, has stated that the Minecraft world that he created lacks any notion of gender in order to deflect criticism from the fan base about the lack of official female player avatars.

Notch stated, “I’m not saying this is a good way to deal with gender in all games, as the better your graphics are, and because of how quickly the human mind tries to identify the gender of other humans, you are going to have to make a decision as a developer about gender, but I felt we could get away with it in Minecraft.”

Persson also says that the avatar in Minecraft is a representative of all human beings rather than simply a male human individual.

Even the animals in Minecraft lack a genre, because it would require too many resources in order to differentiate them.

Minecraft has been a success both on the PC and on the Xbox 360 and Mojang continues to deliver constant updates.
