Ultima Forever Takes Place 21 Years After Ultima IV

Video game developer BioWare has clarified the time frame for the recently announced reboot of the Ultima series, saying that it was set to take place 21 years after the events of the Ultima IV and is not a direct remake of the classic title.

Kate Flack, who is the lead designer working on Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar, has told Joystiq that, “Ultima 5, 6, 7, 8 haven’t happened yet. Lord British is among the stars; he’s no longer there. Lady British has now taken the throne and we’ve found that one Avatar isn’t going to do it this time round, we need multiple Avatars and multiple people coming to try and repair the land.”

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar will include a number of multiplayer and social elements, allowing players to recruit their friends to their party and use interactions with them to enhance their status and evolve towards the Avatar one.

Flack also talked about the overall tone of the game, saying, “We specifically dug out all of the original manuals and all of the old design documents, and all of the interviews we could get our hands on, talking about Ultima IV and why it was created the way it was.”

Ultima Forever will be played from a top down isometric view and will respect most of the conventions that were introduced in the core Ultima franchise.

The Lord British character will be replaced with a female version because of copyright issues.

Recently Electronic Arts has used the Ultima name for a free, online strategy game that failed to get a solid audience.

BioWare plans to introduce a beta stage for the game before the full launch, allowing gamers to offer feedback on the game.

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar will be launched on both the PC and the iPad towards the end of this year.
