Nintendo Will Not Repeat 3DS Mistakes with Wii U

We might not yet have an official launch date or a price for the upcoming Wii U home console, but hardware developer Nintendo says that it has learned a lot from the launch of the 3DS handheld and plans to avoid making the same mistakes.

Satoru Iwata, who is the chief executive officer of Nintendo, has told a Japanese newspaper during an interview that, “We won’t make the same mistake that we did with the 3DS, which was considered relatively high by consumers.”

The Nintendo 3DS was introduced in Japan on February 26 of 2011, and it arrived on Western markets one month later and the device was well received initially, both by critics and by customers, with high sales that went above what the normal DS managed at the same stages during its existence.

As summer hit, the 3DS started to see a decline, which many blamed on a combination of relative high price for the hardware platform and lack of dedicated titles coming from Nintendo.

The company’s solution was to slash the price of the 3DS by about 30 percent in August and launch a number of high-profile games, including Super Mario 3D Land, which quickly became the best seller for the platform.

Since then the 3DS has been performing steadily well and has managed to soundly beat its main rival, the new PlayStation Vita from Sony.

The mistakes learned line from Nintendo probably means that the company is ready to launch the Wii U for a lower-than-expected price and take a loss on each console sold for a while in order to make sure that it creates a big enough installed base to make it profitable in the long term.

Analysts have been predicting that the Wii U needs to launch with a price of under 300 dollars and Euro in order to attract players who are looking for a new home console.
