Frost & Sullivan: iTunes Stores Next Stop Should Be China

Market research firm Frost & Sullivan has released a report praising Apple’s decision to roll out iTunes Store in 12 new countries across Asia, calling the move crucial to long term growth for the Mac maker.

“Already available in Japan, Australia and New Zealand, now consumers with credit cards in Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam will be able to access millions of songs and movies,” Frost & Sullivan reports.

The company’s partner and Southeast Asia Managing Director, Manoj Menon, regards it as a “fantastic development” for Asia, where Apple's growth has been predominantly fueled by hardware sales, not digital content.

“This announcement will help Apple leverage the completeness of its ecosystem a lot better in these markets,” he believes.

Menon sees this as a step forward that will enable the company run by Tim Cook to compete more effectively with Android, with its mobile devices also becoming more and more popular in these markets.

Despite people’s affinity for cheaper Android devices, “The iTunes store is also a way to get long term relationships with customers as the iTunes store can be a big differentiator,” added Menon.

“This may also be a very positive development towards helping the industry fight piracy in several of these countries. The availability of content in attractively packaged and priced formats will encourage and enable several users to stay away from piracy. This is a very powerful development for the industry and the ecosystem,” Menon also said.

Menon pointed out that regional giants such as China, India and Indonesia are key territories that Apple hasn’t tapped yet with its iTunes Store.

“Apple also needs to urgently be able to launch the iTunes Store in these countries, particularly China and India. This has not yet been announced, but these markets will be key to long term continued growth for Apple,” he said.
