Zwei Developer Praises Open World Games and Skyrim

The creator of the Resident Evil series of undead fighting video games has expressed his admiration for the open-world genre and for its most recent success, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which was a critical and commercial success in late 2011.

Shinji Mikami, who is now working with Bethesda, has told the PSM3 magazine that, “I started playing it when it was released, though right now I’m terribly busy and have had to stop. It’s a fantastic game. Just amazing.”

“To have such a huge open world and so much freedom is wonderful, and the gameplay too is so varied; all those parameters and details that you can tweak and that affect the game. The characters are great too,” he continued.

He added, “There are very few – Red Dead, GTA IV, Skyrim… It’s not like there are dozens of them yet. So right now I think it’s a really interesting genre. Perhaps once the market is saturated I won’t think so, but right now it’s a wide open field.”

Mikami was very careful not to suggest that he was working on an open world game at his current company, Tango Gameworks, but he said that he did not have the staff create an experience as complex as that of Skyrim.

The developer would like to create a game that revolves around major design rule and then manages to mix the new open-world concept with a number of traditional game mechanics.

Tango Gameworks was founded back in 2010 and the company recently announced that it was working with Bethesda on a new project called Zwei.

Mikami says that this will be the last game that he is ready to direct and that it will use the traditional survival horror genre.

Neither the developer nor the publisher has decided on platforms for Zwei or on a potential launch window.
