The Sumatran Striped Rabbit Suffers from Lack of Media Attention

Most people probably never heard of the Sumatran striped rabbit, seeing how most environmental campaigns focus on much more “mainstream” animal species. But it seems that this little fellow is also threatened with becoming extinct at some point in the future.

The main reason why this is most likely to happen is pretty much the same as for all other endangered species: loss of natural habitat.

However, whereas animals such as tigers, elephants, rhinos and the like benefit from intense media attention, and therefore, get the help of several green-oriented organization, the Sumatran striped rabbit is left alone in its fight for survival.

Truth be told, it would be difficult to start working towards saving this species, seeing how, as we already pointed out, not much is known about it.

Jennifer McCarthy, a scientist currently working with the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, explained how, “There have been no studies of the species despite continued recommendations for research”.

She also added, “There have been some previous reports of single camera photographs, or sightings, but our study is the first to try to combine all of this data.”

Mongabay reports that, from Jennifer McCarthy's standpoint, in order to safeguard the Sumatran striped rabbit, considerable efforts should be directed at placing both the Bukit Barisan Seletan, and the Kerinci Seblat National Parks under protection.

In spite of the fact that no official head-count for the Sumatran striped rabbits still existing in the wild is available, we believe that environmentalists are not wrong in speculating that, with Sumatra's losing nearly half of its forest since 1985 until present days, this particular animal species is not exactly having the time of its life.

The same source informs us that, together with the Sumatran striped rabbit, countless other animal species are threatened with extinction without anyone trying to raise awareness or to implement conservation programs.
