SoaSE Rebellion Diary: Close to Real-Time Strategy Perfection

I have been trying to find something truly bad to say about Sins of a Solar Empire – Rebellion, which I have been playing almost non-stop during my free time last week, and I think I am scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

There are just issues that negatively influence my time spent with the real-time space-based strategy title: some inadequacies in the Artificial Intelligence of the enemy factions and the lack of a true single-player story campaign.

The first problem is, as far as I can see, hard to spot for the player who only dabbles in Sins of a Solar Empire and I was not entirely sure whether it actually existed before I looked on the official forums and saw that others reported something similar.

The A.I. is able to do pretty much anything that a human player can but only as long as you kick its ability to resists towards Hard or even higher.

On Normal the computer tends to be a walkover, losing to pirates even if it seems have the money for bribes, refusing to defend important planets in order to retreat to its home sector when it already has adequate defenses.

But as long as you only select Hard or even tougher enemies everything should be fine on the Artificial Intelligence front.

The lack of a true single-player campaign is an even trickier issue and might actually make Sins of a Solar Empire unpalatable for some gamers.

I still have fond memories of Homeworld because of its story and the way it used limited means to deliver an oddly affecting narrative.

And I see Sins as the perfect vehicle for Ironclad Games to deliver something similar in scope and impact, proving that real-time strategy games can have solid, interesting stories that exist outside of the scope of the game mechanics.

But the Ironclad Games team is small and I can understand their decision to drop it if the time devoted to story creation would have made the core game somewhat weaker.
