Google seems to be making most of today’s headlines in tech, with the search giant releasing two major iOS applications, as well as official word that its Chrome web browser is the culprit behind some kernel panics on 2012 MacBook Airs.
A Genius speaking to an affected Apple customer reportedly said that “the specific combination of Intel HD 4000 chip + flash + Chrome” causes 2012 MacBook Airs to crash. The company will release a patch soon.
The search giant released a statement to Gizmodo, saying, "We have identified a leak of graphics resources in the Chrome browser related to the drawing of plugins on Mac OS X. Work is proceeding to find and fix the root cause of the leak.”
The spokesperson elaborated, stating, “The resource leak is causing a kernel panic on Mac hardware containing the Intel HD 4000 graphics chip (e.g. the new Macbook Airs).”
The bug has been filed with Apple, and “since it should not be possible for an application to trigger such behavior,” the Mac maker itself will release an update to patch this hole.
“While the root cause of the leak is being fixed, we are temporarily disabling some of Chrome's GPU acceleration features on the affected hardware via an auto-updated release that went out this afternoon (Thursday June 28),” the Google staffer said.
“We anticipate further fixes in the coming days which will re-enable many or all of these features on this hardware,” he added.
Tests using various builds of the Chrome web browser have indicated that Canary, the alpha-grade version receiving fast-paced development updates, does not affect MacBook Airs in such a way.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for any updates from Google to help users get back to their normal web browsing as soon as possible.
