Google Maps for Android Works Offline Now

Google Maps just got a lot more useful on the go. Google had a brand new version of the Android app ready for the Google I/O conference and the updates are quite impressive. One thing that Google is boasting about is offline access.

This is actually a big thing, users can now download the mapping data for any region they're interested in ahead of a trip.

What this means is that connectivity is no longer an issue and, what that means is existing navigation devices and software are in for even more trouble than until now.

Anyone with an Android phone or tablet will be able travel to new cities or make longer trips and not have to rely on anything but their existing device while also not worrying about internet access, which can be tricky out in the country or in plenty of other circumstances.

What's more, you'll still be able to use the GPS so Google Maps can not only help you find a place, it will be able to get you there as well.

"Now, you can download the latest version of the app in Google Play, then select and save a region of a map from more than 150 countries for use offline," Google wrote.

"Whether travelling internationally, carrying a WiFi-only device, heading underground on the subway or restricting your mobile data usage, you can now save up to six large metro areas (e.g., Greater London, Paris, or New York City and surrounding area) and use Google Maps for Android to find your way," it said.

Another addition to Google Maps for Android is a new way of enjoying Street View images, you can now better immerse yourself in the 360 degree imagery via the sensors on your phone or tablet. Just go into Compass Mode and you'll be able to see both interior and exterior locations and move around by tilting your device. The feature is now smoother and faster, Google says.
