Google Earth for Android Has Gorgeously Rendered Cities, to the Envy of Apple

Apple is not the only one to boast about gorgeous 3D buildings in its map app, Google is not far behind. It may no longer be the default map app on iOS devices, but Google is making sure that iPhone users know what they're missing out on.

Google Earth has been the traditional way of checking out our planet in three dimensions, well except for walking about and seeing it with our own eyes, and this is true on mobile devices as well.

Detailed 3D buildings and models were revolutionary when they first showed up and they're still impressive for the most part.

But everyone else has not been standing still, Nokia has some gorgeous models in its map app for several cities and, from the looks of things, the same can be said about Apple.

Not wanting to fall behind, Google introduced its own next-generation 3D models for Maps/Earth. And they're now available on your Android phone or tablet via Google Earth 7.0, just launched.

"Gone are the days when the only way to get a bird’s eye, 3D view of your favorite metropolitan area was from the window of a penthouse apartment or helicopter. Now you can soar above your favorite cities in 3D, with Google Earth for mobile," Google wrote.

The new Google Earth has just landed on Android devices. What's really interesting is that the mobile version came first, Google Earth for PC is still stuck at version 6.2. Android users get priority, but Google has said the new version of Earth is coming to iOS very soon.

With iOS still being at least a couple of months from shipping, Google will be the first to offer gorgeous 3D models on iPhones and iPads, ahead of Apple.

"Creating this comprehensive 3D experience is possible due to advanced image processing. Using 45-degree aerial imagery, we're able to automatically recreate entire metropolitan areas in 3D," Google explained.

"This means every building (not just the famous landmarks), the terrain, and any surrounding landscape of trees are included to provide a much more accurate and realistic experience," it said.
