Verizon Confirms Galaxy S IIIs Locked Bootloader

Galaxy S III, the latest flagship Android-based smartphone from Samsung, is expected to become available for purchase at Verizon Wireless on Thursday, July 12th.

The handset has been available for pre-order for the past several weeks and, although it appears to have issues meeting demand for it, Verizon did manage to push some of the pre-ordered units to its customers.

Thus, it came to light the fact that Galaxy S III would land at Verizon with a locked bootloader, unlike the flavors that reached other wireless carriers in the United States.

Due to this state of facts, rooting the device becomes a bit more difficult, the same as the loading of custom ROMs on it.

According to Verizon, it decided to lock this handset’s bootloader so as to provide users with the best experience on its network, thus preventing them from installing software that might affect that.

The wireless carrier also noted that it was constantly reviewing its technologies so as to make sure that its customers are provided with the best possible solutions. Here’s what the company told The Verge:

Verizon Wireless has established a standard of excellence in customer experience with our branded devices and customer service. There is an expectation that if a customer has a question, they can call Verizon Wireless for answers that help them maximize their enjoyment and use of their wireless phone.

Depending on the device, an open boot loader could prevent Verizon Wireless from providing the same level of customer experience and support because it would allow users to change the phone or otherwise modify the software and, potentially, negatively impact how the phone connects with the network.

The addition of unapproved software could also negatively impact the wireless experience for other customers. It is always a delicate balance for any company to manage the technology choices we make for our branded devices and the requests of a few who may want a different device experience.

If you were planning the purchase of a Galaxy S III at Verizon but you feel that the locked bootloader is a deal breaker, do not despair. Enthusiasts already managed to root the device, and you’ll be able to gain increased control over your unit as well.
