Study Argues in Favor of Natural Gas as Means to Battle Climate Change

While green-heads, national governments and energy companies around the world argue over how renewable power sources are the way to go if we are to put a leash on climate change and global warming, one researcher claims that, before going all green, there should one intermediary phase: natural gas.

Entitled “Assessing the Greenhouse Impact of Natural Gas,” his study aims at convincing the afore-mentioned debating parties that, rather than going for the “all or nothing” option and keep arguing about it, there is the possibility of promoting sustainable development one step at a time.

As far as professor Lawrence M. Cathles from Cornell University is concerned, simply by giving up on coal in favor of this energy source, human society would succeed in considerably diminishing its ecological footprint.

His research further argues that is does not even matter that drilling operations need to be carried out in order for us to gain access to underground natural gas resources.

Apparently, when all is said and done, using natural gas to power up our day-to-day activities and our industries will provide us with 40% of the benefits a complete switch to green energy sources would offer.

Moreover, for the time being at least, it makes more sense financially wise to opt for this semi-environmentally-friendly source, rather than make major investments in developing existing green energy markets.

Cornell University's Press Relations Office states that professor Lawrence M. Cathles explains how, “From a greenhouse point of view, it would be better to replace coal electrical facilities with nuclear plants, wind farms and solar panels, but replacing them with natural gas stations will be faster, cheaper and achieve 40 percent of the low-carbon-fast benefit.”

He further adds that, “Gas is a natural transition fuel that could represent the biggest stabilization wedge available to us.”

From where we stand, if natural gas can indeed help counteract global warming without putting too much strain on global economy, there is no reason not to give due consideration to this possibility.
