RIM Debuts BlackBerry Curve 9220 and 9320 in Kenya

Research In Motion lost big chunks of market share in all regions, which is why the company is desperate to bring its entry-level devices in emerging markets.

Today, the Canadian company announced the immediate availability of the BlackBerry Curve 9220 and BlackBerry Curve 9320 in Kenya.

Although the handset maker did not unveil the phones' pricing options, it did say that both can be purchased through leading retailers and distributors across the country.

The Curve 9320 and 9220 are aimed at emerging markets, such as Kenya and promises to offer customers an interesting combination of features and apps that will surely help them stay connected while on the go.

Both smartphones set itself apart from other BlackBerry devices with the new dedicated BBM key, which offers users the possibility to instantly access RIM’s popular mobile social network, BBM.

In addition, both handsets offer the longest lasting battery life yet in a BlackBerry Curve smartphone, claims RIM. The 1450 mAh Li-Ion battery is rated by the manufacturer for up to 432 hours of standby time or up to 7 hours of talk time.

Hardware-wise, Curve 9220 and 9320 come packed with 512MB of RAM, 512MB of ROM and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

They feature a similar 2.44-inch standard display that supports 320 x 240 pixels resolution and 65k colors. However, while the Curve 9320 sports a 3-megapixel rear photo snapper, the Curve 9220 only emebds a 2-megapixel main camera.

BlackBerry Curve smartphones have been extremely popular in Kenya, offering affordable access to BBM and other popular social networks. The new compact and stylish BlackBerry Curve models offer improved battery life and a truly unique messaging and social networking experience that will appeal especially to Kenyan customers who want to upgrade to a smartphone for the first time, or existing BlackBerry Curve customers looking for a step up in speed and functionality,” said Waldi Wepener, Regional Director for East, West and Central Africa at Research In Motion.
