Leaked iPhone 5 Panel Takes Us Back to 2010

An alleged iPhone 5 panel employing in-cell touch technology has been leaked by a Chinese source. Picked up by various news outlets today, including ourselves, the photograph in question doesn’t seem to be consistent with all the rumors.

The image in question (available from MyDrivers.com) depicts a hardware part that bears a striking resemblance to older-generation parts used in previous iPhone models.

That wouldn’t necessarily be a problem (actually, it would be, if Apple doesn’t want to launch its third iPhone 4 in a row), but the rumors are saying a different story entirely.

Multiple hardware leaks have indicated that the iPhone 5 would boast a larger, 4-inch display. Most pundits agree that it is, indeed, the case (though it doesn’t have to be, admittedly).

The same goes for in-cell technology, which has the digitizer placed straight over the pixels, eliminating one thick sheet of glass from the device, allowing it to be thinner and lighter.

This image depicts nothing of the sort. In fact, this doesn’t even look like a leak at all. iFixit has iPhone teardown images that look exactly like this. Plus, the LCD is visibly a standalone hardware part, as is the digitizer (the overlay that records touch input).

The general belief that Apple will release a fifth-generation iPhone with a larger display doesn’t necessarily stem from any leaks either.

Many would argue that it is imperative for the company to finally upgrade the device to meet today’s standards. Apple would shoot itself in the foot by launching a new iPhone bearing the same design as the previous two. For a company that prides itself on innovation, that’s simply not feasible.

In any case, the finished device is expected to arrive sometime this fall, perhaps alongside a new generation of smaller iPads that Apple is allegedly also building.
