Apple Releases Much Improved Configurator 1.1

A new version of Apple Configurator is now available for download featuring improvements to the apps installation module, new preferences, tweaks to the profile editor, and better handling of VPP codes.

Apple says Configurator 1.1 is a recommended update for all users of the iDevice management app. Available free of charge from the Mac App Store, this release improves reliability and ease of use when installing paid apps with Volume Purchase Program redemption codes, Apple says.

The update further adds new preferences to disable the automatic removal of apps or profiles installed by the user when a configuration is reapplied to a supervised device, as well as to disable reapplying a configuration each time a supervised device is connected to the Configurator app.

Admins will be able to see when a profile cannot be installed on a supervised device due to a missing value in a required field, and the profile editor will warn the user if the profile is missing fields that are required for installation.

Last but not least, if the App Store is unavailable, VPP codes will no longer be marked as invalid.

Apple includes an important note with the release notes for Apple Configurator 1.1, explaining that, “in previous versions of Apple Configurator, Refresh was available in the Devices menu to force a refresh (reset the device to the specified configuration, for example to ensure that the correct settings, apps, profiles, and so forth are on the device) of a supervised device.”

The Mac maker is glad to inform customers that the Apply button is no longer present in version 1.1. It gets replaced by the "Refresh" button, but only when the supervised device hasn’t undergone any changes.

Apple believes “this is especially useful if you have disabled the preference to automatically refresh when a supervised device is connected via USB.”
