Joseph Gordon-Levitt Rips Into GQ for False Statement on Brothers Death

Joseph Gordon-Levitt rarely puts himself in the spotlight if he can find a way to avoid it, but he's stepping out of his comfort zone to put GQ on blast for saying in a new story that his brother Dan died of a drug overdose.

Dan, Joe's older brother, passed in 2010, with GQ writing in this month's feature piece on the actor that, “the elder Gordon-Levitt died of an alleged drug overdose in 2010. 'It was an accident' is all Joe will say about that'.”

According to Joe, GQ is being irresponsible and dead wrong about that: not only did Dan not die of an OD but he was actually willing to talk about his brother, just not about his death.

“First of all, I’d like to thank both of the Jims and everyone else at GQ for putting me on the cover of their magazine this month. That kind of exposure is a huge help to all the work I love to do, and I’m deeply appreciative,” Joe writes on his Tumblr page, in the same courteous manner he always addresses his readers or the media.

“I’m writing this because I have a problem with what their article says about my brother. I’ll be honest, it really made me feel terrible,” he adds.

“Using the word 'alleged' technically allows the writer to say whatever she wants. The 'allegations' to which she must be referring were made by a handful of gossip websites. They are factually incorrect according to the coroner’s office and the police department. I don’t like publicly speaking about my brother’s death, but I’m making an exception to correct this irresponsible claim,” the actor goes on to say.

He underlines that he did not avoid talking about his brother, but merely requested the interviewer not to dwell on how he died, choosing instead to talk about Dan's life and the things he managed to accomplish in it.

“Dan was a brightly positive, genuinely caring, and brilliantly inspiring person, and I liked the idea of such a wide readership learning about him. My parents and I are disappointed with what the article chose to focus on regarding this sensitive subject,” Joe writes.

While it's clear that he's using this channel to urge GQ for a retraction on that particular fragment of the interview, as far as we can see, the magazine or correspondent Amy Wallace are yet to pay any heed to his words.
