Iiyama Presents 27 FullHD VA Panel 24-Bit WLED ECO Professional Monitor Part 2

Well-known monitor manufacturer, Japanese company  Iiyama has just announced a new 24-bit professional monitor on the company’s official website. The new addition to Iiyama’s product lineup is a 27” model that uses WLED technology implemented in a VA LCD panel.

Make sure you read the first part of our professional display technologies presentation.

VA is short for vertical alignment and Wikipedia describes it as:

“Vertical alignment displays are a form of LCDs in which the liquid crystals naturally align vertically to the glass substrates.

When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystals remain perpendicular to the substrate creating a black display between crossed polarizers.

When voltage is applied, the liquid crystals shift to a tilted position allowing light to pass through and create a gray-scale display depending on the amount of tilt generated by the electric field.”

There is an important link between the “W” in WLED and the VA panel technology, but before revealing that, we’ll present some of VA’s advantages and disadvantages.

We’ll start with the good news first, as VA panels offer better color reproduction and wider viewing angles than TN panels.

The VA panel technology also brings large viewing angles, higher contrast ratios and it is generally cheaper to make when compared with IPS displays.

These are most of the advantages offered by the VA technology over the classic TN panels used in most of today’s LCD monitors, but there are some clear disadvantages as well.

One important note that we must emphasize is the fact that the VA technology offers the highest contrast ratios compared to all other popular panel types, which leads to much better black levels.

Therefore, when contrast is the specification under the scope, the VA technology shows the best results.

On with the disadvantages now, we must say that, although the VA technology shows better color reproduction and wider viewing angles than the TN panels, the IPS panels are superior in all these aspects.

One other disadvantage is the fact that the VA technology usually suffers from higher response times when compared with both TN and IPS panels.

So, VA is clearly superior to TN technology except the response times, and inferior to IPS technology, except the fact that VA offers absolutely the best contrast and black level among the three technology types.

You can read more on professional display technologies in the third part of our article and you’ll also find out what’s so special about the “W” in WLED, and what the connection to the VA technology is.
