WinRAR 4.20 Stable Available for Download

After three beta versions, WinRAR 4.20 moved to a stable release. The highlights of this revision include changes for the better in RAR and ZIP compression, thanks to multi-core processor support.

RAR decompression algorithm has also been improved as far as speed is concerned, although CPUs with multiple cores are not supported for this operation. However, despite this handicap, RAR decompression should be better than in the previous WinRAR.

In order to speed up RAR compression, the developer optimized the algorithm for multi-core environment and increased the memory requirements to 120MB.

In the case of ZIP compression, the operation is noticeably quicker in multi-core environment. The developer informs that it should also be improved on single-core systems, compared to WinRAR 4.11.

Another important modification is that Windows 2000 is no longer supported by WinRAR and WinRAR self-extracting modules.
