Weekend Reading: The Crowded Beginning of 2013

Summer is here and, like many gamers will tell you, it caused not just a drought in many countries but also in the gaming industry, as only a few games are actually set to come out in the next couple of months.

As such, we’re now forced to look to the future and prepare for the onslaught of games that will once again be released during the winter holiday season (October-November).

While it’s no surprise that many companies want to get their games on store shelves in order to attract holiday shoppers come December, if you take into account all of the recent delays and announcements, it’s clear that the crowded release scheduled extends well into the spring of 2013.

Usually, the beginning of the year, particularly January and parts of February, are as deserted as the summer months. Nowadays, however, this is the time when games that were big enough for a holiday release, but didn’t actually come out due to delays and other such things, are released.

Just at a glance, we already know that the first three months of 2013 will see the launches of big titles like Aliens: Colonial Marines, BioShock Infinite, Crysis 3, Dead Space 3, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Gears of War: Judgment, Tomb Raider, God of War: Ascension.

What’s more, just like this year, you can expect quite a few other big games to come out during spring, before the traditional summer drought once again appears.

While I’m thrilled that so many big games are coming, I once again hope that some companies realize the potential in months like July or August and stop aiming for crowded months like October, November, February or March.

Until such a thing happens, at least we can take solace in the fact that during the summer we can clear up a backlog of games we didn’t have a chance to finish.
