Google Kills Apple Blog, Blames Mac & iOS Popularity

Since 2006, the fine gents at Google have maintained an Apple-centric blog with relevant Mac and iOS announcements for their fan base. That’s no longer the case, starting this week.

Before you jump off the roof of your house, know that Google isn’t pulling the plug on any of its products for the Apple fanbase. They’ve simply decided to continue their posting elsewhere - the Google blogs for individual products.

“More than five years ago, we created this blog to tell you about our software for Macs,” writes Scott Knaster, editor of the Official Google Mac Blog.

“Since then, Apple’s products have become more popular than ever, and we’ve kept up by offering strong support for OS X and iOS, including the speedy and popular Google Chrome for OS X, the amazing Google Earth, and a whole bunch of excellent iOS apps,” says Knaster.

He continues, explaining that it was the popularity of Mac OS X and iOS that caused the shutter:

“Our Mac and iOS support has now become so mainstream that we realized we just don’t need to keep Mac news on its own blog, so we won’t be posting here any longer. For updates, we encourage you to visit our blogs for individual products, like the Chrome Blog and the Lat Long Blog.”

Sure, you could say it had something to do with Google Maps getting kicked out of iOS. And no one would blame you for it. But it’s hardly the case here.

In fact, the Mountain View-based search giant is said to be committed to improving the Google Maps experience on iOS. In other words, if Apple doesn’t want them in, they’re not giving up.

Apple now has its own mapping solution. It’s a killer app in iOS 6 that does 3D flyover views and integrates with Siri for voice-activated commands, such as driving routes (just to name a couple of features). It promises to be everything Google Maps isn’t, and then some.
