The recently-announced AMD Opteron server monster with 2,048 cores will likely see the light of day quite soon. Not long ago, we were reporting on AMD’s first foray into server design and manufacturing here. Now it seems like the company is moving very fast.
For those who don’t know Mr. Feldman, he’s the former CEO of SeaMicro who now stands as AMD’s corporate vice president and general manager of Data Center Server Solutions Business Unit.

The prototype shows an AMD Opteron processor in a Socket C32, two SODIMM memory slots, and 4 SeaMicro ASICs that power the Freedom Supercomputer Fabric ultra-fast interconnect.
SeaMicro’s Freedom Supercomputer Fabric interconnect offers a huge bandwidth of 1.28 Tb/s.
The new, original server products from AMD will reportedly enter the market in November this year, and we can only wait and see the impact they will have on Intel’s current reign of the high-profit server market.

Even so, Intel’s money and market clout was able to keep AMD’s server share at a low 25% of the market.
Now, AMD has the opportunity to develop its own servers using really innovative technology, but the raw compute superiority is on Intel's side.
