EPA Launches App That Monitors Water Quality

At some point throughout the course of this day, EPA members and local representatives are expected to meet in Riverside, Montana, in order to discuss ways of protecting the streams in the Kansas City area.

In case one is wondering why EPA is willing to go to such lengths in ensuring proper water quality in this region, let us just mention the fact that, as stipulated in the Clean Water Act, the agency is obliged to collaborate with local leaders and the general public in order to safeguard national water resources.

It is expected that, once the conference is over, two major announcements will be made.

First of all, it will become official that EPA has decided in expanding its water-quality monitoring for the aforementioned water sources.

Secondly, it will become public news that an app meant to help with this campaign has been successfully launched.

As far as old-school water quality monitoring goes, it seems that $156,000 (about €125,000 / รข‚¤100,000) will be invested in various ground-based equipment and satellite technology, whose purpose will be that of recording and informing the public about real-time bacteria concentrations in the water.

The end goal is to make it easier for the citizens living in the nearby communities to decide on their past-time activities.

Naturally, this means that said pieces of information must reach the people as quickly as possible.

EPA's official website explains that this is precisely where and when the new green-oriented app comes into play.

Thus, the app uses color codes to indicate which activities are safe to be undertaken by citizens, based on the information received about water quality.

Developed with help from researchers employed at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the application will be made available for iPhone, iTouch, iPad, and – in the not-too-distant future – for Android phones.
