Seagate Launches Backup Plus Storage Devices

There are some new external hard drive units up for sale from Seagate, all of them equipped with the company's Dashboard software that performs local backup with just one mouse click.

There is a certain feature that Seagate sees as central to the marketing success of the Backup Plus series of hard drives: the ability to back up content from social networks like Flickr and Facebook.

Duplicates of photos uploaded on those sites are stored on the HDDs. This should give ease of mind to people who worry about possible cloud/server failure and the subsequent loss of their online lives.

“The idea of providing a backup of photos and videos from Facebook is an interesting one, which I believe may help people come to realize the importance of maintaining multiple copies of any digital asset regardless of where it is stored,” said Brett Sappington, director of research for Parks Associates.

“Social media has become a massive repository for personal digital content, and most consumers have not likely considered the possibility of losing access to those shared memories.”

Seagate's Backup Plus HDDs come in portable and desk versions. The former have 500 GB, 750 GB or 1 TB, while the latter range from 1 TB to 4 TB. Thus, prices go from $119.99 to $249.99 (96 to 200 Euro, according to exchange rates).

And here is where we reach another asset: the storage units can be used interchangeably between PCs and Apple Mac systems. There are still special color versions more fitting for each though (Backup Plus for mac come in silver casings for instance).

Those interested in getting one of these products should check with their local retailers or online stores (Amazon, BestBuy, Seagate's own website, etc.).

“Backing up needs to be an essential part of everyone’s digital life. Nearly everything that is dear to us is now in a digital format; from tax documents, to emails, to family photos and video, many of these files can not be recreated in the event of an accidental loss or system failure,” said Scott Horn, vice president of Marketing at Seagate.

“Seagate is in the business of keeping digital content and files protected in every aspect, whether it is in the cloud, stored on PC or with our external consumer products. Backup Plus is a product that eliminates the barriers to protecting these digital assets. The new Dashboard delivers a simple and complete backup experience with the added benefit of saving photos and video stored on Facebook and other social networks.”
