Doom 3: BFG Edition Looks Great in Stereoscopic 3D, Dev Says

Doom 3: BFG Edition will be launched this October as a remastered version of the original shooter, so developer id Software is quite confident that it will impress many players thanks to the classic feel and the new technologies that will be supported, including stereoscopic 3D on the PS3.

Doom 3 took the first-person shooter genre to new heights and, in order to make the wait for Doom 4 a bit more bearable, id Software is going to re-release the last game in a special BFG Edition that’s remastered for current platforms.

We have already seen the game in action thanks to a video but now, its Producer, Eric Webb, has talked with the PS blog and revealed a few details about the upcoming game and how it’s going to take advantage not just of the PS3’s DualShock 3 controller but also its support for stereoscopic 3D.

“One of the first things we did when we first started work on it was pay attention to how the controls feel,” Webb said. “There’s something about the DualShock 3 controller and its dual analog sticks that feels really good when you’re holding it in a game like this. It gives it a different life and almost makes it an entirely new experience. So I think it’s really cool on PS3.”

Stereoscopic 3D required a lot of experimentation, according to Webb, but it paid off in the end as the 3D made the experience more immersive.

“We were really surprised when we first had a look at it in 3D. John [Carmack, co-creator of the Doom series] went through quite a few different iterations of the game to help us figure out how best to fit the technology in. Just like adding DualShock 3 controls to the original Doom, 3D really brings Doom 3 to life.”

“It’s interesting when you’re playing; you almost lose all of your peripheral vision and get sucked into the experience. I’d go so far as to say it’s the best implementation of stereoscopic 3D I’ve seen in a game so far. It really does draw you in.”

Doom 3: BFG Edition includes not just the game and its Resurrection of Evil expansion, but also new single-player content as well as ports of the first two Doom games.
