Game Developers Undecided on Microsoft Surface Potential

Microsoft has announced during last week that it has plans to make a move into the tablet market with the launch of Surface, a device that is set to be mobile but offers many of the same capabilities that are currently linked to laptops.

However, it seems that game developers are not yet sure whether the Surface can be an interesting platform for their own products.

Neil Sorens from Zen Studios, the makers of the popular Zen Pinball, told Gamasutra that, “It's not just a tablet; it's more like the Swiss Army Knife of computing devices. It can be a tool or feature that is useful for many applications and purposes - such as using an Xbox controller, HDMI out, or connectivity with other Microsoft devices including SmartGlass.”

Randy Smith from Tiger Style added, “Are Xbox gamers going to hook up controllers and play Gears of War in coffee shops? In their living rooms, next to their more powerful Xbox? On airplanes? The Surface has the potential to be a casual device, but I worry there's not enough incentive for game makers to help push it in that direction.”

Other game creators were concerned with the apparent lack of innovation of the Surface and the fact that it might not attract enough buyers to make developing games for it a possibility.

Mike Mika from Other Ocean believes that Surface might become the sort of device that appeals to small indie teams because it can be used for all stages of video game development, allowing developers to create and then publish a game without switching platforms.

Surface will use Windows 8 when it is launched and features the new SmartGlass technology.

Microsoft has not offered clear details on the launch window of the new device and there’s been no mention of a possible price for the tablet.
