Wii U Launch Unaffected by Sony and Microsoft Plans

The gaming world does not know what Microsoft and Sony plan to do with their own future next-generation consoles, but that does not trouble Nintendo, a company that is focused on making the Wii U a success on its own.

Satoru Iwata, the president and the chief executive officer at Nintendo, tells Gamasutra that, “Our intention is to return to profitability after just one year of losing money. I just cannot say that it's a good thing for Nintendo at all to record an annual loss for two or more years in a row. … The past year is due to the 3DS hardware sales.”

“We were selling hardware below the cost, so this year we are already recovering and improving the profitability of the 3DS,” he also mentions.

He further argues, “We have not changed our strategy. In other words, we just do not care what kind of 'more beef' console Microsoft and Sony might produce in 2013. Our focus is on how we can make our new console different than.”

Many analysts believed that the underpowered Wii would not be able to compete with the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, but the motion tracking powered device managed to become the bestselling platform of the current console generation.

The main innovation of the Wii U is the new touch screen controller that will allow players to access some elements, like inventories and maps, without pausing the game while also enabling asynchronous experiences like those seen in ZombiU.

Nintendo has not yet announced the price tag for the Wii U or the exact launch date, but the company has revealed that it will be out before the main Christmas shopping period.

During the recent E3 2012 industry event, the company showed titles like Assassin’s Creed III and Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition running on the Wii U.
