The Elder Scrolls Online Wont Take Skyrim and Just Add Multiplayer, Dev Says

Zenimax Online Studios boss Matt Firor has once again talked about his company’s big project – The Elder Scrolls Online – and emphasized that the title won’t just simply take the traditional Elder Scrolls single-player experience seen in previous games, like Skyrim, and simply add multiplayer.

The Elder Scrolls Online’s announcement surprised quite a lot of people, as many believed that, after five single-player games, Bethesda wouldn’t want to add something as controversial as multiplayer into its long running franchise.

However, that’s exactly what Zenimax Online Studios, the developer of the online game, is trying to do, under the leadership of industry veteran Matt Firor.

He recently talked with Gamesindustry and revealed that the main goal isn’t to make a multiplayer version of Skyrim, or previous games in the series.

“It is the franchise that we are taking online, not the single-player game,” Firor emphasized. “The single-player games are still the single-player games. We're taking the license and the franchise online and doing something with it that hasn't been done before, much like the Elder Scrolls novels.”

Firor emphasizes that this is one of the crucial points to get across to the community and he assures Elder Scrolls fans that the studio will be faithful to the franchise.

“All of those concerns are valid by the community until they actually see it and play it. We've taken a lot of effort to make the lore consistent and make sure that it's the experience that they expect. The places they can go, the characters they can play and the enemies are all based very much on the world that they know, and that's where it works.”

Firor revealed previously that the main quest line of The Elder Scrolls Online can be played alone, so fans of the series that don’t really want to interact with others can still experience it like a regular, single-player game.

The Elder Scrolls Online is set to appear in 2013 and a beta stage has already been confirmed to start next year.
