Samsung Omnia W Reaching End of Life Status at Telstra

Rumor has it that Microsoft is going to release the Windows Phone 8 to handset manufacturers sometime in September, and that the first smartphones will be launched in October/November.

The Redmond-based company already confirmed that current Windows Phone devices wouldn’t receive an upgrade to WP8 (Apollo), instead they would get another update dubbed Windows Phone 7.8.

We’re not sure how many features these upcoming mobile platforms will share in common, but the fact still remains that those who currently own Windows Phone device and are more than satisfied by the overall experience might be tempted to upgrade to a WP8-based smartphone the moment it gets launched.

Moreover, most Windows Phone 7.5 Mango smartphone are likely to become obsolete, even with the Windows Phone 7.8 update.

This is probably one of the reasons that multiple carriers will try to get rid of these handsets, in order to make room for the upcoming Windows Phone 8 smartphones, which are expected to arrive on the market by the end of the year.

In this regard, WPDownUnder reports that Australian carrier Telstra is about to drop the Samsung Omnia W smartphone, which was launched in the country six months ago.

While not the most impressive of its kind, the Omnia W was pretty affordable. The smartphone sports a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display that support 480 x 800 pixels resolution, and features Corning Gorilla Glass coating for extra protection.

The phone is powered by a 1.4 GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor and packs 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory. There’s also a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a secondary VGA front-facing camera for video calls.

Samsung Omnia W will soon reach “end of life” (EOL) status at Telstra Australia, so those who still wish to purchase the smartphone should hurry up and grab one before it disappears from the shelves.
