Next-Generation Consoles Need Lots of RAM to Support Great Games

Square Enix has talked about next-generation consoles and has revealed that, if manufacturers like Sony or Microsoft want high quality games on their new platforms, they’ll have to add lots of RAM in order to allow developers to build better experiences.

Square Enix wowed E3 2012 attendants with the Agni’s Philosophy tech demo for its Luminous Engine, showing off a stunning experience that ran on a high-end PC equipped with a single Nvidia GTX 680 graphics card.

In order to allow for such an experience to run on next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox 720, both Sony and Microsoft need to fit into the devices as much RAM as possible, at least according to Square Enix’s Takeshi Nozue, the creative director and senior manager of the company.

He told Edge magazine, via TSC, that memory size is the biggest challenge on current-gen consoles, so new platforms should certainly improve upon this aspect.

As of yet, however, neither Sony nor Microsoft has confirmed that they’re even working on a new console.
