New Android Virus Discovered in China Affects Over 100,000 Devices

There's a new Android malware running in the wild in China, the folks at TrustGo Mobile claim. It looks like the mobile security company announced recently that its TrustGo Security Labs app has discovered a virus aimed at China Mobile's Mobile Market.

The new malware is dubbed Trojan!MMarketPay.A@Android, and it's said to automatically place orders and downloads paid apps and video content without user's knowledge.

Obviously, this could quickly result in very high phone bill. According to TrustGo Mobile, the newly discovered Trojan!MMarketPay.A@Android has been found in nine additional China Android markets and has infected more than 100,000 devices.

However, given the fact that the virus has been discovered on July 4, the number of infected could be much higher.

The ease and speed that malicious apps can be developed and distributed to unsuspecting users is one of the fastest growing security concerns. Anyone with a smartphone or mobile device is a potential target,” said said Xuyang Li, CEO of TrustGo.

TrustGo Mobile also mentioned that MMarketPay.A virus may arrive as repackaged apps with the following package names: com.mediawoz.goweather; com.mediawoz.gotq; com.mediawoz.gotql; cn.itkt.travelskygo; cn.itkt.travelsky; com.funinhand.weibo; sina.mobile.tianqitong or com.estrongs.android.pop.

In order to get rid of the virus, those with infected device can download a mobile security application that recognize it. As a matter fact we recommend Android users to download and install a mobile security software just in case.

TrustGo's mission is to make it easier and safer for users to download the Android apps they want, wherever they find them. We believe that TrustGo is the only security application that can detect and prevent threats like the Trojan!MMarketPay.A@Android through our patent pending Secure App Finder Engine,” concluded Li.
