Mobile Phones Do Not Threaten Hardcore Gaming, Says DICE Leader

Despite recent statements from a number of veteran developers, one leader of the DICE development studio believes that mobile gaming will never pose a direct threat to home consoles or to high-end PCs.

Karl Magnus Troedsson, the general manager of DICE, has told Edge that, “People are generally correct that things are changing, and a lot of people in this industry are acknowledging that – some people don’t want to see it, though. But I would also say the people who are painting such a grim picture of where we’re going are wrong.”

He added, “Yes, people are playing more on their mobile devices, but I don’t see people playing on other SKUs as a problem for triple-A developers, it’s actually the contrary. I think people engaging in any kind of gaming is good for all games, because it means that people will play more.”

Karl Magnus Troedsson admits that he has begun to play more on his mobile despite the fact that he has always seen himself as an AAA player who was mostly interested in the best graphics and the best audio.

As time passes, the high-end gaming will move towards powerful PCs in the home space while players will be able to enjoy a number of companion titles on their mobile devices.

The developer also thinks that, while ease to use is important, there will always be a lot of players who will only want to play the best-looking titles on the market on their home devices.

DICE is at the moment working on delivering more content for its Battlefield 3 first-person shooter, with a number of new DLC packages set to be delivered all through 2012, and players can now also sign up for a new Premium service, which is in many ways similar to the Elite that Activision is offering for Call of Duty.
