EURO 2012 Final Breaks Tweeting Record


Football fans can take a break now that the EURO 2012 is over. Spain's decisive victory over an apathetic Italy sealed the deal as far as football is concerned, but that just means it's a good time to look back at the entire competition.

That's exactly what Twitter is doing, showing off some impressive stats as well as a very cool tool to gauge interest in all of the teams participating in the competition.

Spain's fourth and final goal in the EURO 2012 final sparked a lot of tweets, the most related to any sporting event to date, 15,358 tweets per second at its peak. The entire match generated some 16.5 million tweets from around the world.

Over at euro2012.twitter.com, you can check out how many tweets cheered for each team and at which time. It's a very interesting visualization of the type of activity and discussion Twitter can generate. There are plenty of per-team details as well.
