AT&T Plans New Service for Blocking Stolen Phones

Mobile phone carrier AT&T is reportedly gearing up for the launch of a new service for its users, providing them with the possibility to block stolen devices.

The new service is reportedly set to kick off on July 10th, which is next week, and will involve the creation of a block list of stolen devices, which will have their service suspended when an attempt to use them is made.

To activate the service, one would have to contact a customer service representative directly. Users with remote data wipe apps on devices will have to activate them before suspending the device.

For the time being, it is uncertain what exactly the service will involve, The Verge notes. However, the guidance states it clear that "only the person who originated a block may request block removal."

Back in April, a national database of stolen handsets was announced, and AT&T’s plans for this service follow that announcement.
