Acer: Microsoft Should Stick to Software

With the approach of Windows 8, Microsoft has been showing signs of active involvement in the hardware market, brought about by the need to promote the OS on both the PC and mobile device front.

Not everyone is pleased about this though. In fact, one of the most notable companies that disapproves is Acer, on the grounds that OEMs will suffer needlessly.

“I think Microsoft's getting involved in the hardware business is designed to promote its Win8 OS. But I sincerely recommend they withdraw from the hardware market when they get what they want,” said Acer's founder, Stan Shih.

Bill Gates, unsurprisingly, does not share this opinion, saying that its new project, Surface, can become highly relevant and eliminate the difference between PCs and tablets.

We aren't completely sure that such a thing is for the best, and even Gates admits that laptops will probably stay part of education, but to each his own.

Microsoft may or may not build devices besides Surface. Time will tell.
