Wii U Power at Least on Par with Xbox 360, Crysis Dev Says

Crytek, the studio behind the stunning Crysis series and the CryEngine 3 technology, has revealed that the Nintendo Wii U is quite good and its hardware is at least on par with the Xbox 360 in terms of power.

Crytek is one of the most respected independent developers in the gaming industry and its Crysis titles have pushed platforms to their limits, so quite a few people are wondering whether it’s going to support the Nintendo Wii U.

According to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, the studio is impressed with the upcoming home console but, at least for now, it can’t risk developing games for it because it’s unclear just how popular it’s going to be.

"My opinion of the Wii U is very high," he told CVG. "It's just that we didn't have a business case unfortunately that justifies us making a game for it."

This doesn’t mean that the console isn’t powerful enough for Crytek, as it’s hardware is quite good and the CryEngine 3 technology is already running smoothly on it.

"It doesn't mean that CryEngine 3 doesn't run on Wii U - it actually runs beautifully. In fact, there actually is a game in development from a respected developer that we will be announcing. I've seen the game running and it looks really great."

"From my perspective I do not understand the public's concerns that the Wii U is weaker than PS3 and 360," he added. "That I cannot see. From my perspective the Wii U is minimum as powerful as Xbox 360."

Quite a few companies have expressed their support for the Nintendo Wii U, so it’s going to be interesting to see if Crytek will eventually start bringing its own games onto the home console.

Until then, the studio’s next title, Crysis 3, is scheduled to appear in early 2013.
