Well-Thought-Out Fan Feedback Will Always Be Rewarded by BioWare, Studio Says

BioWare has once again discussed the topic of feedback from fans and emphasized that, if criticism is well thought out and not just an emotional response, it will always be taken into consideration by the studio.

Quite a few big games have appeared in recent years from BioWare, including Dragon Age II or Mass Effect 3. Sadly, both have generated their fair share of controversy, with fans complaining that the fantasy RPG was too simplified, while the sci-fi shooter's ending left much to be desired.

BioWare has taken this criticism to heart and for Dragon Age 3, it's asking fans what they really want. For Mass Effect 3, it has already promised that a free add-on will appear soon enough to bring more closure.

BioWare Montreal Development Director, Dorian Kieken, has talked about the studio's stance on feedback from fans with GamesIndustry.

"If someone gives a well thought out criticism, something that is tangible, those are the people that we try to reward as much as possible. And we want to reward them, because that feedback is how we make better games," he said.

"On the opposite side, opinion that is too emotional, we won't reward that in the same way. The more you put that as your philosophy, the more you start to have a culture where people are trying to be more analytical with their feedback."

Kieken also highlights that, if a studio starts listening only to fans, the identity of the interactive experience is lost, so a balance must be struck between the original project and the customers̢۪ desires.

"I believe in a balanced approach," he added. "It's a fine line with dangers on one side or the other, but it's the healthy one. And I think it's representative of what gaming is. It's not a two-hour art-form that's imposed upon you. It's interactive, so you're going to have your say on it."

Judging by current projects, BioWare wants to give fans a bigger role in the development of a game, so let's hope the studio and its community know what they're doing.
