Vita and PS3 Combo Is Better than the Nintendo Wii U

The main selling point for the upcoming Wii U home console from Nintendo is the touchscreen-enabled tablet controller, but one Sony executive believes that the new device will not offer as many opportunities as simply connecting the PlayStation Vita handheld with the PlayStation 3 home console.

Scott Rohde, who is the vice president of the Sony Worldwide Studios, has told Games Industry that, “Because we have the Vita, I think we can do a lot of special things. And remember, that Wii U tablet doesn’t have a processor in it, so it’s got to be fueled by that box sitting under your TV.”

He believes that, “We can do some pretty special things that you’ll start to see on the floor this year and you’ll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that’s in your hand as well.”

Rohde also talked about cross platform gameplay, pointing to games like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Sly Cooper 4 that were demoed during the E3 2012 trade show.

He suggested that many other upcoming games from the teams working on the Vita will offer some form of cross platform gameplay with the PS3.

Sony has repeatedly stated that it was satisfied with the performance of the PlayStation Vita, despite the fact that the console has failed to sell as many devices as the analysts expected.

The publisher and hardware maker is also preparing more titles for the handheld, which are expected to push sales up.

The market, on the other hand, expected Sony to enact a price cut of around 30 percent , which would make the new device more appealing to gamers, in a way similar to what Nintendo has done with the new 3DS in August 2011.

The Nintendo Wii U is expected to arrive before the end of 2012.
