Spoilers for Dexter Season 7: What Will Deb Do Next?

As the September 30 premiere date looms in, “Dexter” fans must be on their edge of their seat and, considering how season 6 wrapped, they have every reason to be so. Executive producer Sara Colleton is offering a few details on what to expect from the 7th season of the killer series.

Speaking with TV Guide, Colleton, who has been aboard the “Dexter” ship from the start, begins by stating the obvious: the events in the season 6 finale will inevitably bring about a lot of changes.

As fans must know, the finale saw Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) walk in on her half-brother Dexter (Michael C. Hall), during one of his ritualistic kills. Six years of secrets and hiding had just gone down the drain.

Colleton is more aware than anyone else about the implications of this: not only is Deb in love with her half-brother, but she also discovers that he's nothing as she believed him to be.

This will color all the events in the future 2 seasons of the show, which also happen to be its last.

“It rocks her world so there are a few classic Deb-isms. If the series-long quest for Dexter was to finally have someone who really knows him – well, be careful what you wish for because Deb now knows everything and that's a game-changer,” Colleton says.

Season 6 was all about Dexter finding faith; religion and faith in God was one of the main themes, as fans must already know.

In this respect too, season 7 will be different because, the moment Deb opened that door and walked in on Dexter, she also opened the door to very human feelings that will be taking over him.

“It is about things he's never experienced before, which are regret, responsibility, shame, betrayal, all of those things. Also, it's the flip side of wanting to be known, and then once you are known, there's a loss of freedom,” Colleton explains.

“It comes with heavy responsibility, so he's dealing with a lot of emotions that he's never had before, and never been allowed to feel before or allowed himself to feel before,” she adds.

Whereas Julia Stiles' Lumen brought Dexter freedom in the season before this one, Deb will bring him the opposite of that. Being a cop will ensure that.

Colleton promises that season 7 will see Dexter at his most vulnerable: fans who have come to appreciate him for how cold and calculated he is will be shocked to see him as vulnerable as Superman without his cape.

And it's not just Deb that he has to be afraid of, Colleton says.

“There are other complications that will come in because, at the crime scene, Dexter's blood slide gets found by Lieutenant LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) because he loses it in the chaos that ensues and she immediately recognizes it's his. The only other time that she had seen this blood slide was in the copy case of the Bay Harbor Butcher,” she says.

And, in true “Dexter” fashion, he will also get a main rival: someone like him, a killer with a Dark Passenger he must take out. A new woman will also come in, but she will be more like Mallory Knox from “Natural Born Killers” than Lumen.
