SONY Joins Panasonics OLED Development Efforts

There were many rumors pointing towards an alliance between SONY and Panasonic, and these days they seem to become a reality. The companies have just reportedly announced a partnership on developing and mass-producing OLED panels.

We already reported about Panasonic’s efforts in this field here, and there’s a clear logic behind the move.

Samsung has been leading the sales and development of the OLED technology since 2004.

On the AMOLED market they own over 80% of the pie, and they’ve just spun-off the manufacturing part of their OLED business.

Panasonic was already set on investing in OLED technology and SONY registered heavy losses lately due to the downturn of the economy and the Japanese disaster from last year.

Panasonic is also a Japanese company and it was hit by last year’s catastrophe also.

The company recorded high losses and it is currently in a serious austerity program.

It is quite easy to see that joining forces will help the companies ease the financial stress of the OLED investment in R&D and manufacturing.
