Sleeping with a Tune On Could Help You Learn It

Musicians practicing their tunes know how hard it can be to commit some of the more difficult songs to memory. A new study suggests that sleeping while the song is playing in the speakers could help them learn the notes faster and more efficiently.

The investigation suggests that the memories of what musicians practice are reactivated when the song is heard, even if this happens during sleep. These memories are then stored in the brain, but the process is more efficient because it takes place while the individuals are sleeping.

Participants in the study took 90-minute naps, but the team believes that the same effect could occur following shorter naps as well. “We also found that electrophysiological signals during sleep correlated with the extent to which memory improved,” expert James Antony says.

The scientist, lead author of the paper and a researcher with the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program at Northwestern University, adds that “these signals may thus be measuring the brain events that produce memory improvement during sleep,” e! Science News reports.
