The PlayStation 4 Needs to Deliver a Significant Leap from Current-Gen Experiences

Sony has once again vaguely discussed the possibility of releasing a next-generation console – the oft-rumored PlayStation 4 – and has revealed that the device will be announced when it can deliver a significant leap in terms of experience over the current devices.

Next-generation consoles are expected by quite a lot of gamers and developers but, unfortunately, neither Sony nor Microsoft has revealed anything about new devices at E3 2012 earlier this month.

This hasn’t stopped Andrew House, the current president of Sony Computer Entertainment, from discussing the possibility of a next-generation home console, saying that his company will reveal it when it can demonstrate a leap over the experience delivered by current devices.

“The right time to talk about new advances in hardware is when you can demonstrate a significant leap on the current experience, and something that is going to be attractive. That remains our philosophy,” House told MCV.

“Beyond that we have nothing to say at this point,” he quickly added.

House also touched on the role of the PlayStation division in Sony’s corporate plans, saying that he hopes to help out former SCEA boss Kaz Hirai in the revival of the company.

“In Kaz’s first strategy meeting he pointed out three core businesses that he felt was critical to Sony’s future and we were honored and somewhat pressured to be highlighted as one of them. I see my role, in part of my return to Sony corporation, is to serve Kaz best by building bridges with the other divisions, which is critical for any large corporation. And also to banish the idea that SCE is somehow a separate island, which sits apart from the rest of the organization.”

While there was no talk at this year’s E3 about next-gen devices, many expect the PS4 and Xbox 720 to be revealed at E3 2013.
