Microsoft Preps for a Hybrid Cloud with New Windows Azure Services

Microsoft is betting big on the cloud moving forth, and is ensuring that it can deliver all the necessary features and services that meet user’s needs.

Recently, the company introduced the concept of “Hybrid cloud,” which involves the use and building of applications that connect to data across multiple datacenters.

According to Microsoft, this is the reality of the cloud today, as customers are looking for means to move applications and businesses to the cloud at their own pace.

To support that, a solution that would deliver the necessary flexibility to enable multiple ways for customers to design, develop and deploy your applications and IT solutions is needed.

A new set to Windows Azure services has been made available as preview, in an attempt to simplify the building of applications that can take advantage of both the cloud and on-premises servers.

Bill Laing, corporate VP Server and Cloud, Microsoft, explains in a recent blog post that these capabilities in Windows Azure will deliver the flexibility that customers are looking for when it comes to bringing their applications to the cloud.

Moreover, he explains that Microsoft is looking into adding support for new operating systems, along with the release of new language libraries for .NET, Java, PHP, and Node.js, and that all these will be complemented by the availability of Windows Azure in more markets worldwide.

Windows Azure Virtual Machines is one of the new services announced for the platform, enabling virtual hard disks (VHDs) to be moved back and forth between on-premises and the cloud.

The Windows Azure Virtual Network has been launched to offer customers with the possibility to provision and manage virtual private networks (VPNs) in Windows Azure. It also supports the secure extending of on-premises networks into the cloud.

Another service that Microsoft has just unveiled for the platform is Windows Azure Web Sites, which enables the building of apps and websites that support.NET, Node.js, and PHP.

All these improvements should enable flexibility in the following areas:

- Increased datacenter capacity through secure VPN connections to the cloud

- Easy operations and management from an improved Windows Azure Management Portal, with powerful operational capabilities for deploying and managing your cloud applications – with similar management support from the command line

- Cloud scale for building websites with ASP.NET, PHP, and Node.js

- Support for additional Operating Systems and OSS language libraries for building cloud applications

- Scale on demand by migrating existing applications to the cloud using portable, industry standard VHDs -- delivering global scale with maximum control

- Secure connectivity between cloud and on-premises applications

- Ability to develop, test and configure new applications in the cloud, and then deploy on-premises for production

Windows Azure customers are encouraged to take these new capabilities for a spin, and deliver feedback on the experience, so that improvements could be added.
