Joe Manganiello Proclaims the Return of The Man

One of the movies most ladies must be looking forward for must be “Magic Mike,” starring Channing Tatum and Joe Manganiello among others. The latest issue of Men's Health UK brings an interview with Joe, who is thrilled to proclaim the return of “The Man” into the spotlight.

The interview is accompanied by a photospread that shows just in what excellent condition Joe is – just in case you somehow missed that in the “Magic Mike” trailers.

For a while there, the “True Blood” hunk recalls, it wasn't easy being an actor and being this ripped because no one wanted to hire him.

Because he was too buff, he was forced to put acting on hold and seek a job in construction, since that was the only job that “allowed” him to be fit and toned.

“[It's] a recent trend. I got to LA in 2000, when we were coming off the ’90s: women looked like men and the men all looked like women. I was constantly being told, 'You’re too healthy',” Joe recalls.

Being an actor was no longer doable, so Joe put his dreams on hold and sought work in construction. He lived with Armie Hammer (he of “The Social Network” and “Mirror Mirror”) and they would work out together.

“I was staying at my friend Armie Hammer’s house and his mother wouldn’t stop feeding me. We just ate and ate and went to the gym to lift these massive weights. Every time we went to the gym it seemed like I had gained 5lb. I just said 'to hell with it' and I got huge,” Joe explains.

Luckily, the times have changed and muscular actors are again in demand. If you're lucky enough to be both muscular and talented, then you have struck gold in the industry.

“In a couple of years I’ve gone from not working to a point where people are writing roles for bigger guys. I think we’re seeing a return to 'the Man.' People come up to me and say they miss having those silent tough guys such as Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen,” Joe explains.

“You’ve still got to be able to act and emote but you also have to fit the role physically, and that physique is now lean and muscular. Think about ancient Greece: equal part athletics, equal part philosophy. I think we’re getting there: the best of both worlds,” he adds.

Fans will get to see whether he has “the best of both worlds” in the aforementioned film, which arrives in theaters on June 29.
