Instapaper 4.2.2 is a new version of Marco Arment’s popular offline reading app which now features Background Update Locations, a feature that enables the app to automatically download new articles whenever you enter or leave home, work, etc.
Accessible in the Settings panel on iPhones and iPads with cellular capabilities, Background Update Locations lets you “automatically download new articles in the background whenever you enter or leave locations such as your home or workplace.”
Arment gives special thanks to News.me for pioneering this technique, adding that “iOS doesn’t yet permit apps like Instapaper to automatically download new content in the background on a regular schedule, but Background Update Locations can get most of the way there for a lot of people.”
The developer further explains that his offline reading tool stores these locations only within the app itself. This being the sole purpose of the function, it does not share your whereabouts with any web services, “not even its own servers,” acccording to Arment. “I respect your privacy,” he pledges.
The feature uses geofencing, which may cause some concern regarding battery life. Arment says there’s nothing to worry about. At least that what his tests showed:
“For whatever it’s worth, I’ve had it enabled for two weeks and haven’t noticed a meaningful battery-life difference on my iPhone or iPad,” he says.
Another added benefit in Instapaper 4.2.2 is improved typography. The app now supports ligatures and advanced kerning. This applies to most articles when using the Lyon, Tisa, Meta, or Hoefler Text fonts, says Arment.
Last but not least, version 4.2.2 arrives with some miscellaneous bugfixes.
The updated app is immediately available in the App Store as a free download for all existing users. Instapaper is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iOS 5.0 or later. For newcomers, the app costs $4.99 / 3.99 EUR.
