EURO 2012 Is Finally Coming to a Curated Twitter Page

It took Twitter a while to realize this, but the world is bigger than the US. Even more surprisingly, there are other sporting events out there than NASCAR races, some even bigger. The European football championships, Euro 2012, is well underway with only the semifinals and the finals to play.

Under the "better late than never" motto, Twitter has introduced the purpose-built #Euro2012 page dedicated to, what else, the premier football competition in Europe.

"During sporting events, Twitter mirrors the roar of the crowd. This is especially true during big events like the European Football Championship, which has ignited a global conversation around soccer [football]," Twitter wrote.

"To bring fans closer to this conversation as it unfolds during the final stages of the Euros, Twitter will have a special page located at twitter.com/#Euro2012," it added.

"You’ll find the best and most relevant Tweets from commentators, broadcasters, journalists, players, former players and lots more who share their thoughts, expertise and emotional reactions as they’re watching the games," it said.

This is very similar to what Twitter did for Nascar races a little while ago. The idea is to create a place where only relevant tweets will end up. Twitter is great for giving everyone a voice, but that only means that everyone will be "speaking" at the same time.

Do a general search on Twitter for any popular topic and you'll be flooded by messages from random people, many repeating the same information over and over again. It's almost impossible to extract anything of value, but that doesn't mean there's nothing of value there.

With the curated pages, Twitter puts together voices that people are going to want to hear from, people involved directly in the event. Granted, that means that you'll be missing out on some of good content generated by "random people."
