Apples Retina MacBook Pro Is a Gold Digger

The new MacBook Pro with Retina display costs $2,199 / 1,750 EUR for the base configuration, a price that can be regarded as premium for any type of pocket. The high-end version retails for $2,799 / 2,228 EUR. That’s not all you’ll be paying, though, if you plan on holding on to your ultra-thin notebook for a few years.

Apple warrants the built-in battery inside the new MacBook Pro against manufacturing defects for one year from the date of purchase.

The Cupertino giant asks customers to note that “the battery is a consumable item and after a period of normal use the battery's ability to hold an electrical charge will be diminished.”

A support document on the company’s site specifically states that “all MacBook Pro models with built-in batteries require battery replacement service.”

This service, according to the Mac maker, costs no less than $199 (pre taxes) / €199 inc. VAT / £159 inc. VAT.

Battery replacement service may be available at your local Apple Authorized Service Provider and the duration of time depends on the repair location. Availability of service stock is also a key factor.

For example, you can get your Mac fully replenished on the same day with the appointment, if you go to your local Apple retail store. The mail-in option will see your computer returned in as much as 4 business days after shipment of unit to depot.

“The battery in your MacBook Pro is a consumable item, which means it will require replacement at the end of its useful life,” Apple states.

The company does not specify exactly how long the battery will hold out, but it does say that it’s good for about 1,000 charges from purchase time. After that, the battery will slowly start to hold less and less charge, until it’ll need a replacement.

The $199 price of the replacement battery includes installation of the new battery and proper disposal of your depleted unit, in order to protect the environment.

Apple also asks users to note that “a replacement battery that has failed because it has been consumed via normal use is not covered under warranty.”

Considering that some users may also require an external disc drive, as well as an Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, the price of the brand new MacBook Pro is suddenly much higher. About $300 higher, to be precise.

However, buying old technology is not the way to go either. While the aforementioned standards are still widely used, it’s only a question of time before the MacBook Pro with Retina display becomes the new status quo.
