A Thunderbolt software update issued last week has proven to be a rotten apple. Multiple users experienced unresponsiveness on startup after the update had been installed, prompting the Cupertino giant to pull the bits and release a new update.
Which Apple did. However, the company didn’t initially explain the purpose of Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1. A recently emerged Support document reveals that it was for that particular issue.
The Mac maker acknowledges said problem, stating that “Apple has identified an issue with Thunderbolt Update 1.2 (released Monday, June 11th, 2012) which caused some Macs to become unresponsive on startup after the update was installed.”
“Apple promptly withdrew the update and investigated, discovering an installation compatibility issue with a previous Thunderbolt update applied by some customers. Apple apologizes for the disruption this caused for customers with affected Macs,” the company adds.
Cupertino also notes that Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2 was released with the purpose of enabling Mac computers to support the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter.
Apple expressly states that people who don’t plan on using this hardware have no business installing this update.
If you’re one of the few unlucky customers who experienced startup problems after installing, all you need to recover your machine is to start up in Lion Recovery by pressing and holding the Command and R keys after hearing the start up chime.
Affected users must then reinstall Mac OS X, which “does not remove any personal data or files from your Mac,” Apple promises.
Alternate solutions include restoring from a Time Machine backup (if you were smart to have one in the first place), or starting up the affected Mac in Target Disk Mode to install the OS X Lion v10.7.4 Combo Update.
