Paul Haggis Confirms Vanity Fairs Tom Cruise Story

The other day, Vanity Fair released the online preview of its upcoming issue, an expose on the Church of Scientology and the auditioning process it held to find a wife for its most high profile member, Tom Cruise, before he met Katie Holmes.

Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Paul Haggis is now confirming all these claims, saying they might sound absurd but they’re 100% accurate.

Haggis is a former Scientologist and, at the same time, one of the biggest enemies the cult has today, being willing to expose its darkest secrets at the drop of the hat.

Even so, this time, he isn’t speaking out because he’s seeking revenge but rather because he’s a friend of the woman whose name was also mentioned in relation to the most recent Scientologist scandal, gorgeous actress Nazanin Boniadi.

Boniadi, as we also informed you yesterday, was the number 1 contender for the position of Tom Cruise’s wife – but she never knew about it. Still, she was “punished” for disappointing Scientology high-ups in the end.

Haggis tells Showbiz 411 that he can personally verify the accuracy of the Vanity Fair account: he knows Boniadi and knows that she was “selected” as Cruise’s wife against her will.

The only reason he never talked about it was because he got the impression Boniadi was so embarrassed that she would rather the story never got out in the press.

“I was deeply disturbed by how the highest ranking members of a church could so easily justify using one of their members; how they so callously punished her and then so effectively silenced her when it was done. It wasn’t just the threats; they actually made her feel ashamed, when all she had been was human and trusting,” Haggis says.

He goes on to explain that Naz’s case isn’t an isolated one: in fact, many Scientologists are put through the same kind of personal hell once they do something that Scientology bosses perceive as going against their policies / beliefs.

They, unlike Naz, will never make magazine covers because they’re not famous, which is why Haggis is “happy” that this story has come out to light.

“They fear an incredibly wealthy organization that boasts that it seeks truth, empowers people, brings families together, encourages independent thought and free speech, and champions human rights,” Haggis says.

“I would like to say that I don’t know how its members, many of them good and intelligent people, can remain so purposely blind when they are faced with evidence like this every day, but then I am no one to talk. I was happily blind for many years, so I know the shame that Naz feels,” he explains.

He concludes his statement by noting that Boniadi left the Church years ago, after trying and failing to cope with this embarrassing incident.

As we also noted yesterday, after Scientology deemed her not fit to be Cruise’s wife (after she shared a house with him for months), she was sent in isolation and, for daring to speak of this to a friend, punished by being forced to scrub toilets.
