Halo 4 will appeal both to old fans and to new gamers, according to Halo franchise developer director Frank O’Connor, who believes that the new trilogy, currently being developed by 343 Industries, captures the magic of the original one, made by Bungie.
Microsoft’s Halo series is definitely one of its core gaming franchises and, after the departure of Bungie from the large publisher, the company has set up a new studio called 343 Industries to oversee the development of a new trilogy.
“Because of the natural growth of the Xbox 360 [installed base], we know who the core Halo fans are but we knew there are going to people who are brand new to it. So we want to include nods and winks to regular players, and resonate this sense of déjà vu on the first level of the campaign. But we also wanted to come up with an experience that's suitable for new players,” he said.
“It was obviously a big challenge but there were some great solutions, and what I'm most excited about is I think we've captured the magic of the first trilogy.”
O’Connor also highlights that Halo is now more of a saga, as the addition of features like the Spartan Ops DLC strategy, which sees new missions be delivered weekly for players to experience, makes everything that much more expansive.
“We're starting to call Halo a saga, because - as you'll see in Spartan Ops - the narrative continues, so we literally don't know how many pieces comprise the overall arch. We know what the beginning, middle and end will look like, we just don't know how many distribution points we are going to have in there.”
While Halo 4 is out on November 6 on the Xbox 360, you can bet that work on Halo 5 is already underway, probably for the oft-rumored Xbox 720.
